Die als 16-Jährige aus Berlin emigrierte jüdische Komponistin Ursula Mamlok schrieb Four German Songs im Jahr 1958 während ihres Studiums an der Manhattan School of Music. Mit ihren Texten aus Hermann Hesses Sammlung Vom Baum des Lebens reflektieren sie die Entwurzelung aus dem heimatlichen Kontext. After emigrating from Berlin at the age of 16, the Jewish composer Ursula Mamlok wrote Four German Songs in 1958 while studying at the Manhattan School of Music. Based on texts from Hermann Hesse's collection Vom Baum des Lebens, the songs reflect the uprooting from home.
