Manfred Speidel compiles 20 writings by Bruno Taut from the three years of emigration in Japan 1933-36. Bruno Taut, the architect of large Berlin housing estates of the 1920s, emigrated to Japan in 1933-1936. His hopes of working there as an architect remained largely unfulfilled. He was able to earn a living with designs for utilitarian objects and furniture, which required Japanese craftsmanship of high quality. However, his main activity became the study of Japanese architecture and culture, especially the home. He wrote many articles that appeared in Japanese translation or in French or English in periodicals. These writings are collected in the present volume. An introductory chapter by Manfred Speidel details Taut's flight from Berlin and his life and work as an émigré in Japan. Seventeen of the 20 essays appear for the first time in German. The essays directly reveal Taut's experience of a world largely unknown to him until then. It is remarkable that the "modern" Berlin architect learns to appreciate farmhouse and folk culture.
