Description

The Secession exhibition of 1901 was the high point Viennas involvement with the famous French sculptor. The present catalogue looks at the history of the annual Secession shows, Rodins skilful use of the media and the exhibitions, his influence on Austrian art and also the masterpieces that have been in the Belvedere collection since then. As a corresponding member of the Vienna Secession, Rodin had submitted works to its exhibitions since 1898. During the 9th Secession exhibition in 1901, Rodin had several major items on show in the central room, i.e. the Burghers of Calais, Balzac, The Age of Iron and Eve. In subsequent years, the Belvedere added further notable works to its Rodin collection, including the terracotta maquette for the Victor Hugo memorial, a bust of the same writer and Eve. The catalogue presents these masterpieces and selected loan works in order to illustrate the way Rodin wrestled with form. It also puts the works into their specific contexts. Individual chapters by selected Rodin experts focus on how shrewdly Rodin used his contacts in bourgeois society and intellectual circles to promote his works. After experiencing the fame the political scandal of his Balzac had brought him, he was quite willing to act opportunistically to fulfil his ambitions and further his career.
Very few artists had as many influential agents as Rodin, who was capable of winning over photographers such as Stephen Haweis and Henry Coles, Eugène Druet, Jacques-Ernest Bulloz and Edward Steichen to his cause. A chapter in the catalogue deals specifically with Steichens photos of Rodin in a pictorialist vein and the importance of photography for Rodin generally.
