Dario Gamboni begibt sich in diesem Notizbuch auf die Spuren des notorisch rastlosen Künstlers Paul Gauguin. Gauguin fertigte während der "Inkubationszeiten", die er nach eigener Beschreibung durchlebte, wenn er in einer für ihn neuen Umgebung, etwa der Bretagne, Auckland (Neuseeland) oder Tahiti ankam, Zeichnungen an, um sich mit der Natur der jeweiligen Gegend vertraut zu machen. Gamboni studierte einige dieser Orte sowie Zeichnungen und andere Werke Gauguins, und hielt seine Beobachtungen in eigenen Fotografien, Zeichnungen und Notizen fest. Die sich daraus ergebenden Vergleiche und Analysen, ausgeführt in ausführlichen Bildunterschriften, zeugen von der intensiven Annäherung des Autors an die Arbeits- und Denkweise Gauguins. In seiner Einführung befasst sich Gamboni mit den Prozessen von Wahrnehmung und Erkenntnis anhand der verschiedenen von ihm praktizierten Techniken, zu denen auch Aufzeichnungen nach Gauguins Aufzeichnungen gehörten, die ihn letztlich zu einer Form der Nachahmung führten.

In this notebook, Dario Gamboni embarks on the trail of the notoriously restless artist Paul Gauguin. During the period of incubation that the artist customarily underwent after arriving in a new environment, such as Brittany, Auckland (New Zealand), or Tahiti, he drew in order to familiarize himself with the local nature. Gamboni studied some of these places as well as drawings and other works by Gauguin, capturing his own observations in photographs, drawings, and notes. The resulting comparisons and analyses, elaborated in extensive image captions, bear witness to the intensive approach made by the author toward Gauguin s way of working and thinking. In his introduction, Gamboni delves into processes of perception and cognition, employing various techniques among them the making of notes after Gauguin s notes that he applies in his own practice, techniques that led him to a form of imitation.
