(Text)
"Against Kandinsky" is the first major publication to examine the schism between Expressionist and geometric abstraction the two canons to compete for stylistic and theoretical supremacy throughout modernist history. Within this historical context, Wassily Kandinsky occupies a unique position as both the originator of Expressionist style of painting and the tireless defender of both intuitive and syncretic modes of abstraction. Against Kandinsky consists of four sections, each of which examines a caseof resistance against Kandinsky's canon of abstraction. By using this particular metaphor of aesthetic division, this publication looks at the history of twentieth century abstraction from a broadened perspective of cultural and social history that aims at emphasizing the parallels between European and American art.
