Wang Qingsong ( 1966), das Enfant Terrible der zeitgenössischen chinesischen Fotografie, kombiniert in seinen Arbeiten traditionelle Techniken der chinesischen Malerei mit einer tief verwurzelten Protesthaltung gegenüber allem "Offiziellen". Qingsongs künstlerische Handschrift hat Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Chinese Pop der achtziger Jahre: Er integriert in seine Werke Warenzeichen mit typischen Pop-Art-Charakteristika und kommentiert so amüsant und farbenfroh seine sich rasant verändernde Umgebung. Diese Arbeiten mögen sich mit Kitsch-Kunst aus anderen Ländern vergleichen lassen; es hat jedoch eine tiefere Bedeutung, dass sie ausgerechnet in China entstanden sind: Qingsong ist sich des heftigen Angriffs auf seine Gesellschaft durch Konsumhaltung, Materialismus und Kommerz bewusst. In seinen fotografischen Inszenierungen macht er sich über diese Lebenshaltung und deren wachsende Bedeutung lustig, indem er aus dem Osten stammende Symbole mit denen des westlichen Marktes verbindet. Ein bedeutender Teil von Qingsongs Arbeit besteht aus Selbstporträts, in denen er ikonenhaft die Richtung in Frage stellt, in die sich seine Kultur entwickelt.

Wang Qingsong (born 1966), the enfant terrible of contemporary Chinese photography,combines traditional techniques of Chinese paintings with a deep-seatediconoclasm toward all things official. Qingsong s artistic vernacular is notunlike that of the Chinese Pop movement of the mid-1980s: incorporating brandnames with Pop Art characteristics, he creates colorful and amusing comments onhis changing environment. These pieces may be on par with Kitsch art fromanywhere in the world, but the act of producing them in China has an even deepersignificance. Aware of the onslaught of consumer culture, materialism, andcommercialism, Quingsong stages scenes which mock these growingly importantattitudes to life by blending symbols of the East with those of the West. Apowerful aspect of his work is his questioning, through the use ofself-portraits as icons, the direction in which culture is turning
