Christian Boltanski (geb. 1944 in Paris), einer der wichtigsten Gegenwartskünstler, ist ein Meister der Inszenierung von Situationen und Räumen. In ihnen evoziert und befragt er machtvoll zentrale Parameter menschlichen Daseins wie Lebenszeit, Identität, Körper, Tod und Vermächtnis.In einem eigens für die Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt zusammengestellten Parcours verbindet Boltanski bereits bestehende mit neu entwickelten Arbeiten zu einer einzigen raumübergreifenden Totalinstallation. Die kathedralhohen Säle des Ausstellungsgebäudes werden dabei zum Echoraum seiner Autobiografie, die ob nun fiktiv oder real stets seine Kunst der Erinnerung grundiert.Die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit demKünstler konzipierte und gestaltete Monografie, herausgegeben von Ralf Beil, dokumentiert das einzigartige Kunstereignis und lotet diesen ganz und gar eigenen Echoraum der Kunst Christian Boltanskis mit philosophischen, literarischen und kunstwissenschaftlichen Beiträgen sowie einem Interview mit dem Künstler aus. Christian Boltanski (born 1944 in Paris), one of the most important artists of our time, is a master at staging situations and spaces. In them, he evokes and questions powerful central parameters of human existence such as life span, identity, body, death, and legacy.
In a parcours specially designed by the artist for the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, Boltanski combines previous work with new ones to create a single, three-dimensional, total installation. The halls of exhibition space, with their cathedral-like heights, are turned into a space that echoes Boltanski's autobiography, which whether fictional or real is always the foundation for his art of memory.
