Paul Pfeiffer ( 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii) gehört zweifellos zu den Shooting Stars des noch jungen Jahrhunderts. Nach seinem Studium am San Francisco Art Institute und am Hunter College in New York erhielt er bereits im Jahr 2000 anlässlich der Whitney Biennial einen der bedeutendsten Preise für zeitgenössische Kunst, den mit 100 000 US-Dollar dotierten Bucksbaum Award des Whitney Museum of American Art.Bekannt ist Paul Pfeiffer für seine digital bearbeiteten Fotografien und Videos, in denen er bekannte Bilder globaler Ikonen zerstückelt, fragmentiert oder auslöscht und damit Fragen zu Identität, ihrer Entstehung und ihrer Rekonstruktion in einervon Massenmedien bestimmten Welt beleuchtet. Paul Pfeiffer, born in 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii, is truly one of the shooting stars of the young twenty-first century. After completing his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute and Hunter College in New York, he was awarded one of the most prestigious prizes for contemporary art at the Whitney Biennial in 2000 - the Bucksbaum Award presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art. Paul Pfeiffer has attracted widespread attention with digitally processed photographs and videos in which he dissects, fragments, and eradicates familiar images of "global icons," thus raising questions about their identities, their origins, and approaches to the reconstruction of such idols in a world dominated by the mass media. In his 24 Landscapes (2000), for example, he eliminates the figure of Marilyn Monroe from famous film stills by George Barris, thereby diverting the viewer's gaze to the romantic landscape scenes in the background.Beginning with Pfeiffer's Self-Portrait as a Fountain (2000), this book presents readers a selection of his videos, sculptures, and photographs realized during the past three years.Exhibition schedule: K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, June 12-October 17, 2004
