Der repräsentative Bildband stellt auf großformatigen Abbildungen eine imposante Auswahl von Meisterwerken aus dem Besitz des Kunsthauses Zürich vor: faszinierende spätgotische Tafeln, Gemälde aus der Blütezeit der Niederlande, des italienischen Barock und des venezianischen Settecento. Berühmte Bilder bietet das umfassende Spektrum der großen Schweizer Füssli, Böcklin, Hodler, Segantini, Vallotton, die Skulpturen Alberto Giacomettis. In die Farbwelt von Impressionismus und Postimpressionismus entführen erstklassige Gemälde der führenden Maler, in ihrem Zentrum eine Werkgruppe von Claude Monet. Neben Stücken von Edvard Munch sind wichtige Werke von Oskar Kokoschka, Max Beckmann und Lovis Corinth zu sehen. Nicht zuletzt präsentiert der Prachtband einen exzellenten Querschnitt durch die Klassische Moderne Picasso, Matisse, Chagall , die amerikanische Nachkriegskunst, Pop-Art und die weiteren Entwicklungen bis heute; Cy Twombly, Joseph Beuys, Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz und Fischli/Weiss setzen hier die Hauptakzente.
