Johannes Brus (1942) besitzt eine künstlerische Doppelbegabung. Als Bildhauer arbeitet er stets figurativ. Seine in Gips, Beton und Bronze realisierten Abgüsse mit sichtbaren künstlerischen Formulierungen wie deformierten Kanten und Gussnähten sind von nachhaltiger Präsenz. Als Fotograf betätigt sich Brus als Bildersucher und Alchemist, der mit Licht, Chemikalien, Solarisation und Farbe existierende Motive verwertet und nicht zuletzt aus zufälligen Strukturen neue Bilder kreiert.Der handliche Katalog begleitet die gleichnamige Ausstellung in der Neuen Galerie im Haus Beda, Bitburg. Neben Plastiken werden großformatige Fotoarbeiten vom Ruhrgebiet, Tieren und Maharajas, Stillleben, frühe Selbstportraits, neuere Zeichnungen und große neu entstandene Fotogramme vorgestellt. Begleitet von Ansichten des beeindruckenden Künstlerateliers in einem ehemaligen Wasserwerk wird das vielseitige uvre von Johannes Brus sichtbar, das von dessen intensiver Auseinandersetzung mit archaischen Kulturen, mythologischen Figuren und der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte geprägt ist.

Johannes Brus (1942) has a double talent as an artist. As a sculptor, he always works figuratively. His castings realized in plaster, concrete, and bronze with visible creative formulations such as deformed edges and casting seams have an enduring presence. As a photographer, Brus acts as a seeker of pictures and alchemist who exploits existing motifs with light, chemicals, solarization, and paint, and not least creates new pictures based on random structures.The handy catalogue accompanies the eponymously titled exhibition at the Neue Galerie im Haus Beda, Bitburg. In addition to sculptures, large-format photo works from the Ruhr Region, animals and maharajas, still lifes, early self-portraits, more recent drawings, and large, newly created photograms are also presented. Along with views of the artist's impressive studio in a former waterworks, what becomes visible is Johannes Brus's multifaceted oeuvre, which is shaped by his intensive examination of archaic cultures, mythological figures, and the history of art and culture.
