Die Frage, was in der Religionswelt des Alten Orients ein Gott, eine Göttin bzw. was das Göttliche ist, wird in der Forschung der letzten Jahre verstärkt diskutiert. Antworten auf diese Frage werden in diesem Band ausgehend von der Analyse der Phänomene des Anthropomorphismus und des Anthropopathismus gesucht. Der einleitende Beitrag des Herausgebers bringt den Anthropomorphismus und den Anthropopathismus ins Gespräch mit Erkenntnissen der historischen Anthropologie und zeigt auf, dass diese Phänomene ebenso Kulturspezifika und Entwicklungen unterworfen sind wie die Auffassungen über den menschlichen Körper und die menschlichen Emotionen. Die weiteren Beiträge erörtern die Entstehung des Anthropomorphismus im Feld der Religionen überhaupt und untersuchen die Anthropomorphismen in der altorientalisch-alttestamentlichen Götter- und Gotteswelt religionsvergleichend, wobei teils grundlegende Entwürfe vorgelegt werden. Im letzten Teil des Bandes werden die Emotionen des alttestamentlichen Gottes thematisiert und ein erster Vergleich mit modernen Gefühlskonzeptionen gezogen.
How can we understand and define conceptions of deities (whether male or female) and the divine sphere in ancient Near Eastern religion(s)? This question has received a great deal of attention in recent decades. The present volume contributes to the discussion by analyzing the phenomena of anthropomorphism and anthropopathism. An introduction by the editor addresses anthropomorphism as well as anthropopathism and attends to connections with historical anthropology. It is argued that these conceptual fields are informed by particular cultural developments in the same way as conceptions of the human body and human emotions. The subsequent articles discuss broadly the emergence of anthropomorphism in various ancient Near Eastern religious contexts. Taken together, they provide the necessary basis for further comparative research. The final part of the volume focuses on emotions of the God of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible and compares them with modern conceptions of emotions.
