Description
In 1956, Shostakovich's confidant Levon Atovmyan put together the Second Suite for Jazz Orchestra. Atovmyan rearranged a total of eight pieces from Dmitri Shostakovich's film scores and stage works, including excerpts from Korsinkina's Adventures, The Hornet, The Bright Brook, Maxim's Return and The First Season. Some of these pieces were originally intended for film productions, but were never published or used before they found their place in this Suite. The music combines catchy melodies with dance-like elegance, ironic refraction and typical Shostakovich wit. Despite its entertaining character, it is artfully crafted and shows the composer from a light, but by no means trivial side. This volume is part of the revised and corrected new edition of orchestral works by Dmitri Shostakovich published by Boosey & Hawkes and Sikorski. Published as large-format study scores, they ensure optimum readability. All scores and the accompanying orchestral material are available in new computer typesetting; the orchestral parts are also compatible with the scores of the New Shostakovich Complete Edition.Instrumentation:orchestra I. March - II. Dance 1 - III. Dance 2 - IV. Little Polka - V. Lyric Waltz - VI. Waltz 1 - VII. Waltz 2 - VIII. Finale
