Description
(Text)
Commercial exploitation of Prunus africana is carried out largely to supply the pharmaceutical industry with an active ingredient used to manufacture drugs for the treatment of prostate cancer. Although this trade is a useful source of foreign exchange, international trade has had a devastating effect on the wild populations. Despite all the mobilization around the management of Prunus, it is evident that the resource is over exploited and it keeps declining. The mobilization at statutory level has not been effective in creating sustainable management. Though exploitation/importation of this product from Cameroon was banned in October 2007 by the EU and later reinstated in 2010, several gaps still exist in the management and governance of this product. This book provides insides on the gaps that exist and avenues for a way forward. It also explores the actual impact of the EU ban on the exploitation of Prunus africana and the consequence of this on the perception and attitude of local farmers. This document is of great importance to the pharmaceutical industries, NGOs, policy makers, researchers, patients suffering from prostate cancer, students and the wider public.
