Karate is practiced all over the world and has developed alongside society. There is a general assumption that karate is a mystical and traditional practice that offers those who practice it an opportunity to experience ancient Japanese culture. However, this is not the case. This book considers the development of karate by analysing the life history of six British Karate experts to see their views of how karate is practice in contemporary, liquid modern, society. This book takes particular focus at how fear and uncertainty have been commonplace in karate practice. Detailing how fear is used within the practice in a number of different ways.
