This book explores the culinary and drinking traditions of medieval Tallinn (Reval), a prominent Hanseatic town in the eastern Baltic Sea region. Drawing on a wide range of documents preserved in the Tallinn City Archives, the study offers a comprehensive representation of urban dietary practices and their development. The study explores the manner in which local culinary habits were influenced by the introduction of novel foodstuffs to Livonia via Hanseatic trade, as well as by domestically produced goods, which were frequently prepared in accordance with German culinary traditions. The food culture of medieval Tallinn was shaped by the interaction of norms and customs brought by colonists, long-standing local traditions, and the region's natural conditions. These factors played a significant role in shaping the everyday menu.Inna Põltsam-Jürjo (1969), is a senior researcher at Tallinn University. Her research focuses on medieval and early modern urban and social history.
