Description

(Text)
Due to the still increasing number of vehicles and the limitation on new road infrastructure building, road traffic management systems have emerged as one of the main pillars for the improvement of transportation in terms of efficiency, safety and sustainability. The application of intelligence within the road network thanks to ITS technologies has allowed a change from a static to a real time road traffic management, whose benefits are reflected in the possibility of a better decision making by transport planners and operators. In this process, the analysis of the collected data is a crucial step as it defines the quality of the information which is offered to the final user. In this work, the implementation of a module based on Business Intelligence tools and methodologies is presented for the exploitation, processing and integration of road traffic data, which will provide accurate, reliable and useful information for current and future traffic control. The model, which is to be applied to several road segments located in the Basque Country, proves the potential of these techniques in the field of road traffic management by the computation of real parameters and concepts such as levels of service and Origin-Destination matrices.
