This book began in the felicitous phrase of Harold Isaacs as "scratches on our mind" on the subject of Islam and Muslims, which emerged at the end of the Cold War once again as the hottest topic of concern for public discussion in the West. In these pages I have sought to provide a perspective from within the world of Islam of the nature of the struggles among Muslims on whose eventual outcome will depend the future of more than a fifth of the world's population. I am one among those Muslims who is at home in the West. I was born to an Indian Muslim family and raised in a traditional society that followed the Hanafi school of jurisprudence within the mainstream majority Sunni Islam, and not unlike many Muslims in the West I am deeply aware of and sensitive to the culture and politics on both sides of the divide: the West and the world of Islam. It is from this perspective of an understanding of the two worlds in a misbegotten conflict that I seek to share my reflections as a dissident Muslim with my readers.
