This thesis analyses the institutional framework for the sustainable management of wetlands in Tanzania using Malagarasi-Muyovosi Ramsar Site (MMRS) located in the nothwest of the country as a case study. MMRS is one of the most important wetland sites in East Africa, offering both socio-economic and environmental benefits to communities residing therein and in the nearby regions. However, the resources in this Ramsar site are under pressure of degradation due to the overuse and lack of effective management strategies. Key investigations from the case study shows that lack of strong institutional framework (both formal and informal) lead to ineffective management of this wetland site, and that efforts should be directed on improving the framework while maintaining resource use by the community. In analysing the data, various theories and concepts are employed; these include institutional theory, empowerment theory, Ostrom design principles on common-pool resources, and wetland ecosystem theories.
