Edgar Degas and Vincent Van Gogh have been described as important contributors to the foundations of modern art. But what exactly were these artists influenced by, and how did they break away from the academies and salons which controlled artistic production in nineteenth century France? To help answer these questions this book takes a look at the socio-cultural changes occurring at that time, and pinpoints in particular the arrival of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints on the French art market. The book examines a number of paintings by Degas and Van Gogh and identifies how these artists incorporated diverse Japanese compositional devices, which differed greatly from the Western ideas of their time. The book concludes by briefly looking at a selection of artwork by the author to show how Japanese art, through the work of Degas and Van Gogh, continues to influence Western artists today and contribute towards the evolution of the modern art movement. This book will consequently appeal to artstudents and to art teachers, in fact to any one seeking to extend their understanding of the influence of Japanese art on the growth and continuation of the modern art phenomenon.
