Description

This book explores the functional layers of Czech deverbal nominals from a generative perspective, with a central focus on the interaction between aspect and countability. Building on recent generative theories, the study challenges the longstanding view, originally proposed by Grimshaw, that argument structure nominals are inherently mass and uncountable. The work critically analyzes previous research on Czech nominalizations and introduces a new framework to explain how deverbal nominalizations in Czech can exhibit countability. Through an in-depth examination of the functional layers within both the nominal and verbal domains, the book demonstrates that countability in Czech argument structure nominals is closely tied to aspectual features and telicity, offering a novel perspective on deverbal nominals in Czech. Markéta Blazková works as a postdoc at the Department of English and American Studies of the University of Pardubice (the Czech Republic). She teaches and researches corpus linguistics, morphology, and phonetics. Her academic focus lies in the comparative study of English and Czech, particularly in the area of functional categories. Her broader research interests encompass generative syntax and the acquisition of language.
