Full Description

The abundant historical research literature on modernisation processes, social change and adult education in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries clearly demonstrates the diverse formulations throughout Europe of the 'social question' as one of the key issues in the development and organisation of adult education. Interpretations of the 'social question' and adult learning were negotiated in relation to contemporary economic, political, social and cultural realities. Economic, political, social and cultural changes associated with modernisation processes throughout Europe all impacted upon thinking and action with regard to the organisation of adult education for the 'popular' or 'working' classes.
Une abondante littérature européenne sur l'histoire du processus de modernisation, du changement social et de l'éducation et la formation des adultes au XIXe et XXe siècles, montre clairement que les différentes déclinaisons de la question sociale à travers l'Europe constituent un enjeu majeur du développement et de l'organisation de l'éducation et de la formation des adultes. Différentes interprétations de la question sociale et de l'accès au savoir des adultes ont été élaborées en fonction des réalités économiques, politiques, sociales et culturelles contemporaines. Les changements économiques, politiques, sociaux et culturels, ainsi que le processus d'industrialisation partout en Europe ont eu un impact sur les idées et sur le développement d'actions d'éducation du « peuple » ou des classes « laborieuses ».
