In den Jahren 2007/08 veranstalteten das Institut für Geschichte und das Zentrum für Fernstudien und Weiterbildung (ZFW) der Stiftung Universität Hildesheim in Kooperation mit der Zentralen Einrichtung für Weiterbildung (ZEW) der Leibniz Universität Hannover sowie den Stadtarchiven Hildesheim und Hannover eine über drei Semester laufende öffentliche Vortragsreihe zum Thema "Die Macht der Städte". Dabei wurde der Bogen von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart gespannt. Drei Fragen waren dabei von zentraler Bedeutung: - Was beeinflusste die Macht und die Stellung einer Stadt in ihrem Aufstieg und ihrem Niedergang? - Welche Ereignisse haben den Machteinfluss einzelner Städte vergrößert oder sie aber in Mittelmäßigkeit zurückgeworfen? - Welche Perspektiven hat(te) die Stadt als Lebens- und Machtraum? Der vorliegende Band wurde unter Federführung des Instituts für Geschichte der Universität Hildesheim fertiggestellt und behandelt folgende Themenfelder: Städte von der Antike bis zur GegenwartHansestädte im historischen und aktuellen KontextStadtentwicklungen vom Mittelalter bis in die NeuzeitStadt und ReligionHildesheim und Hannover im VergleichMetropolstädte EuropasStädte im VergleichStädte im historischen und aktuellen MächtekontextStädte in geschichtlicher Erinnerung Das Werk bietet ein großes Spektrum regionaler, nationaler, europäischer, internationaler und globaler Stadtgeschichte und wendet sich damit auch an ein breiteres Lesepublikum.

In 2007-2008 the University of Hildesheim Foundation s Institute of History and Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education, in collaboration with the Centre for Continuing Education at the Leibniz University in Hanover and the City Archives of Hildesheim and Hanover, organised a series of public lectures over a period of three semesters on the topic of The Power of Cities . The scope of the lectures stretched from the ancient world to the present day, with a focus on three central questions:
- What influenced the power and status of a city in its rise and fall?
- Which events increased the power of indvidual cites or pushed them back into mediocrity?
- What perspective does/did the city have as a space of life and power?
This volume was compiled under the direction of the Institute of History at Hildesheim University and covers the following themes:
- Cities from antiquity to the present
- Hanseatic cities in their historical and current context
- The development of cities from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age
- City and religion
- Hildesheim and Hanover compared
- European metropolis cities
- Comparisons between cities
- Cities in historical and cultural contexts of power
- Cities in historical memory
The work offers a broad spectrum of regional, national, European, international and global city history, and is thus addressed to a wide reading public.

Michael Gehler ist Inhaber des Jean Monnet Chair für Vergleichende europäische Zeitgeschichte und die Geschichte der europäischen Integration, Leiter des Instituts für Geschichte der Stiftung Universität Hildesheim und beschäftigt sich mit deutscher, österreichischer und europäischer Geschichte im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert sowie den internationalen Beziehungen nach 1945.
