Es gehört zu den Merkwürdigkeiten der Thomas Mann- und Stefan Zweig-Forschung, dass eine der letzten Lücken im weitgespannten Korrespondenznetz der beiden Autoren den gegenseitigen Briefwechsel betrifft. Dieses Versäumnis wird mit der Edition dieses Bandes nachgeholt. Die Bedeutung des Briefwechsels liegt dabei vor allem in seinem dokumentarischen Wert für die Jahre des Exils. Darüber hinaus gibt er Einblick in das komplexe und widersprüchliche Verhältnis zwischen Thomas Mann und Stefan Zweig. Die Ausgabe bringt erstmals alle gegenwärtig bekannten Schriftstücke aus der Korrespondenz in neuer Transkription. Der Briefwechsel wird durch einen umfangreichen Anhang ergänzt, der Dokumente und Texte zusammenführt, die für den Briefwechsel und die chronologische Darstellung von Bedeutung sind.

It is one of the peculiarities of the Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig research that one of the last gaps conspicuously remaining in the broad correspondence network of the two authors concerns the mutual correspondence. This volume fills the gap. The correspondence is significant for its documentary value for the years of exile, while also allowing the reader to see into the complex and contradictory relationship between Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig. This edition for the first time gives all currently known documents from the correspondence in a new transcription. The correspondence is supplemented by an extensive appendix collecting further documents and texts of seminal value for both the correspondence itself as well as its chronological presentation.
