Professor Dr. Rainer Schlegel received his doctorate in law from the University of Tübingen in 1989 with a thesis entitled »Compensation for Damages and Social Security Contributions«. He served as a judge in the social court system from 1987, most recently as President of the Federal Social Court from 2016 to 2024. From 2010 to the end of 2013, he headed the Labor Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. Since his retirement, he has practiced law and, since November 2024, has served as Ombudsman for Private Health Insurance. He is particularly interested in the sound financing of social security systems and the responsible use of the human and financial resources available for this purpose.
