Anlässlich des 500. Jubiläums des Bauernkriegs von 1525 fragt dieser Sammelband danach, inwiefern der »Bauernkrieg« in der Tradition spätmittelalterlicher Aufstände stand. Die Beiträge lösen sich von der Idee einer bloßen »Vorgeschichte« und analysieren stattdessen die Wirkmächtigkeit zentraler Aufstandsmerkmale in der 'longue durée'. Damit rücken sie die Aufständischen als politisch versierte Akteure in den Blick, die bereits vor 1525 nach politischer Teilhabe und Lösungen für Ressourcenkonflikte strebten »Before the German Peasants' War: Leitmotifs of Late Medieval Protest Movements up to 1525 «: On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Peasants' War of 1525, this volume examines the extent to which the 'German Peasants' War' stood in the tradition of late medieval uprisings. Moving beyond the notion of a mere 'prehistory', the contributions analyse the long-term impact of key features of premodern revolts. The insurgents appear as politically astute actors who, even before 1525, sought political participation and solutions to resource conflicts. Christoph Mauntel is professor for Medieval History at Osnabrück University.Thomas Roth, M.A., studied history and political science and is a doctoral student at the Institute of History, Technical University of Darmstadt.Gerrit Jasper Schenk is professor for Medieval History at Technische Universität Darmstadt.
