This research is an examination of the language used to represent migrants during the Migrant Crisis which dominated the British newsprint media throughout 2015. I consider the political allegiances of The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Mirror and The Daily Express, in regards to what they may hope to achieve by representing the migrants in a positive or negative manner. By identifying the discursive techniques used to convey these attitudes, I hope to increase awareness of the manipulative techniques deployed by the media to influence society and, contribute to fairer representations of social groups subjected to discrimination. An important aspect of this research is the traumatising image of Aylan Kurdi, a deceased Syrian toddler, which emerged in the media during the crisis. My research considers how external events, such as the resonance of this image, influence the media's representation of migrants.
