Description

This book recognizes and honors the life and work of Adam Curle, one of the leading pioneers of peace education, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth in July 1916. The book is organized in four parts:

a brief introduction to Curle's personal and professional biography and key aspects of his work
a biographical essay on Adam Curle with selected photos in color
key innovative texts that cover the different periods and themes of Curle's life and work; the texts are selected by Tom Woodhouse and John Paul Lederach, who have unique access to the Adam Curle Collection, which is part of the special collections archive of the University of Bradford Library
a reflective essay on the continued relevance of Curle's work for contemporary peace and conflict research

Professor Woodhouse has worked in the Department of Peace Studies since 1974, when he was appointed as Research Assistant to Professor Adam Curle. He developed the first conflict resolution teaching and research activities in the department during the mid 1980s, and in 1990 he initiated the Centre for Conflict Resolution, serving as the founding director of the Centre between 1990 and 2000. In March 1999 he was appointed to a personal chair and took the title of Professor of Conflict Resolution (Adam Curle Chair). Recent publications include Contemporary Conflict Resolution, Polity Press, (with Oliver Ramsbotham and Hugh Miall). Much of his research is concerned with an examination of the relationship between peacekeeping and conflict resolution. With Oliver Ramsbotham he published the Encyclopedia of International Peacekeeping Operations, ABC/CLIO, Denver/Oxford, 1999, and Peacekeeping and Conflict Resolution, published by Frank Cass in 2001

Widely known for his pioneering work in conflict transformation, John Paul Lederach, Professor of International Peacebuilding and an author of 22 books, is involved in conciliation work in Colombia, the Philippines, and Nepal, plus countries in East and West Africa. He has helped design and conduct training programs in 25 countries across five continents. In August 2013, Lederach was appointed director of the Peace Accords Matrix,
the
Kroc Institute's unique source of comparable data on all comprehensive peace
agreements that have been signed since 1989.
