Unter Berücksichtigung sozio-kultureller Kontexte bringt Teresa Morgan religiöse Vorstellungen der griechisch-römischen Antike ins Gespräch mit denen des antiken Juden- und Christentums. Sie untersucht, wie Menschen im antiken Mittelmeerraum und Nahen Osten über einen Zeitraum von tausend Jahren und über alle gesellschaftlichen Schichten hinweg über das Göttliche dachten und was sie annahmen, dass Gott oder die Götter über sie dächten. Die Autorin beleuchtet die Theologie und Ethik der unteren Gesellschaftsschichten sowie das Verhältnis von Glaube und Praxis im griechisch-römischen Polytheismus und analysiert auch Theologie, Ethik und Bibelauslegung der frühen Christen und deren komplexe Beziehung zur Umwelt. Die Ergebnisse der einzelnen Studien resümierend diskutiert sie das Verhältnis von Theologie und Geschichte sowie die Bedeutung von Essaysammlungen für die intellektuelle Arbeit.
