Der Band enthält Beiträge einer internationalen, interdisziplinären und interreligiösen Tagung an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M. Thematisch stehen Fragen nach der Eigenart, der Geschichte, den Funktionen sowie der Rationalität der Prophetie im Verständnis der drei abrahamitischen Religionen im Zentrum. Der Band ist zweigeteilt: Der erste Teil enthält eine Reihe historischer Fallstudien, die die Geschichte des Prophetiegedankens vom Alten Orient über Judentum, Islam und Christentum in Antike, Mittelalter, früher Neuzeit und Aufklärung bis in die Gegenwart verfolgen. Der zweite Teil bietet - wiederum unter Berücksichtigung aller drei abrahamitischen Religionen - Studien zu exemplarischen, systematisch-theologischen und/oder -philosophischen Einzelaspekten, z.B.
