Obwohl biblische Bücher in der Antike auf einzelnen Rollen überliefert wurden, entsprechen sie nicht einem modernen Verständnis von Büchern als kohärente und in sich geschlossene Erzähleinheiten. Vor allem die Bücher der Gründungserzählung Israels in Genesis-2 Könige bilden einen größeren narrativen Zusammenhang. Dies wirft die Frage auf, wie sich die Aufteilung des Textes auf unterschiedliche Rollen zu seiner Kompositionsgeschichte verhält. Wurden die jeweiligen Bücher von Anfang an als getrennte Teile eines mehrbändigen Werkes (sei es Pentateuch, Hexateuch, DtrG oder Enneateuch) konzipiert, oder hat man es mit einer komplexeren Entwicklung ursprünglich unabhängiger Teilkompositionen zu tun, die erst durch eine spätere Redaktion verbunden oder getrennt wurden? Der vorliegende Band geht diesen Fragen am Beispiel der Übergänge zwischen den Büchern Genesis/Exodus und Josua/Richter nach, die sich offensichtlich in Abhängigkeit voneinander entwickelt haben.
