Drei Jahre nach den ersten beiden Bänden (IG XII 4, 1 und 2) erscheint der dritte von sechs Bänden, die die antiken Inschriften der Insel Kos sowie der Nachbarinseln Kalymna, Leros, Lepsia und Patmos enthalten. Der Band IG XII 4, 3 enthält die mehr als 1800 Grabinschriften (darunter mehr als 300 inedita) aus der Stadt Kos und ihrer näheren Umgebung. Sie vermitteln ein eindrucksvolles Bild von der Attraktivität der Polis für die ostägäische Region und ihrer Bedeutung vor allem in späthellenistischer und frührömischer Zeit. Die Inschriften sind nach archäologischen Gesichtspunkten geordnet. Charakteristisch für Kos sind die aufwendig geschmückten Rundaltäre.

This is the third of six volumes of ancient inscriptions from the island of Kos and the neighboring islands of Kalymna, Leros, Lepsia, and Patmos. It includes more than 1,800 tomb inscriptions (among them more than 300 previously unpublished) from the city of Kos and its environs. They offer an impressive view of the city's appeal for the East Aegean region and its particular importance during late Hellenistic and Early Roman times.
