Die Satyrischen Geschichten Petrons (1./2. Jh. n. Chr.) sind nur in Bruchstücken überliefert, aber der ursprüngliche Roman ist noch gut erkennbar. Er handelt von den Gaunereien und erotischen Abenteuern eines jungen Mannes, die dieser selbst schildert. Von seiner Unmoral und der seiner Freunde spricht er mit einer solchen Unbefangenheit, dass man keinen Anstoß daran nimmt, ja sogar großen Spaß daran hat. Die zweisprachige Ausgabe enthält den gesamten Text von Petrons Roman, berücksichtigt die jüngsten wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen und repräsentiert somit den aktuellen Forschungsstand. Niklas Holzbergs neue Übersetzung ist betont wörtlich, aber zugleich auf den Sprachgebrauch heutiger Leser abgestimmt.

Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. Niklas Holzberg lehrt als Professor für Klassische Philologie an der Universität München. Seine Forschungsleistungen und Publikationen auf dem Gebiet der römischen Dichtung haben internationale Anerkennung gefunden.Titus Petronius Arbiter ist etwa zu Beginn der christlichen Zeitrechnung geboren. Werk wie Leben des epikureischen Skeptikers sind von zahllosen Exzessen geprägt. Nach ausschweifenden Jahren als Politiker, Lebemann und offizieller Geschmacksrichter ("arbiter elegantiae") am Hof Kaiser Neros, war er schließlich in eine Verschwörung verwickelt. Um 66 n. Chr. zum Tode verurteilt, zelebrierte er einen lustvollen Freitod.
