Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. In the new volumes, additional essays delve into specific aspects of the works, illuminating their historical context and reception to the present day. Dr. Rainer Nickel studierte Klassische Philologie in Marburg und Berlin und wurde 1970 in Berlin über ein philosophiegeschichtliches Thema promoviert. Der Altphilologe arbeitete zunächst als Lehrer für Latein und Griechisch, bevor er Leiter des Max-Planck-Gymnasiums in Göttingen wurde. Er ist Mitarbeiter der Reihe "Tusculum" und an der Herausgabe der Zeitschrift "Der altsprachliche Unterricht" beteiligt. Er zählt zu den führenden Didaktikern des altsprachlichen Unterrichts.Marc Aurel, geboren 121 n. Chr. in Rom. Ab 161 n. Chr. war er Kaiser des Römischen Reiches, das er in unaufhörlichen Kriegen vor dem Zusammenbruch bewahren mußte. Seine Selbstbetrachtungen sind deutlich von der Philosophie der Stoa beeinflußt. Er starb 180 n. Chr. im Feldlager in Vindobona bei Wien.
