Description

This open access book highlights the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of earthquake engineering, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the International Workshop in Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies (ERIES-IW), held in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 7 9, 2025. The event was meant to provide a unique platform to exchange experiences, share results, and explore future directions in seismic, wind, and geotechnical engineering research, with a focus on reducing hazard-related losses, managing risk, and fostering sustainable solutions. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, present a wealth of exciting ideas that will open novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaboration among different specialists.

1. ERIES-CLIMATHUNDERR: A combined impinging jet and gravity current technique to investigate thermal effects on downburst winds.- 2. ERIES-EOLICS: Evaluation of force coefficients on a lattice structure by experimental wind tunnel tests.- 3. ERIES-LIDAR: Ligurian downslope winds assessed using LiDAR scanner for the safety management of port areas.- 4. ERIES-POLISHED: Wind tunnel measurements and CFD correlation of gas dispersion around offshore supply vessel.- 5. ERIES-ProMoTWA: Code calibration in wind engineering: shortcomings and needs.

Gian Michele Calvi is Full Professor at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS in Pavia, Italy, where he founded the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE Foundation), currently serving as its Director of Science. He is also Adjunct Professor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, USA. In 2024, he was elected President of the International Association of Earthquake Engineering (IAEE). He serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Earthquake Engineering and has received numerous international awards, including the 2006 fib Award for Outstanding Concrete Structure for his contribution to the design and construction of the Rion Antirion Bridge, the 2020 Outstanding Paper Award from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), and the honour of delivering the 19th Mallet Milne Lecture in the UK.

Gerard J. O Reilly is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS in Pavia, Italy and Senior Researcher at the Eucentre Foundation. He completed his studies in Civil and Earthquake Engineering across Ireland, the United States, Japan, and Italy, receiving his PhD in 2016. He has received several international recognitions, including the 2022 Shah Family Innovation Prize from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) in the US and a Starting Grant awarded by the Fondo Italiano per la Scienza in Italy. Since 2025, he has served as Associate Editor of Earthquake Spectra.
