Jacques Joseph Tissot, known as "James" Tissot, was a major artist of the second half of the 19th century. A French painter and engraver trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he spent part of his life in England, where he painted Victorian high society, before returning to the French capital.
He is particularly renowned for his paintings of women and society at the end of the Second Empire.
