Il e un monde qui re e inconnu du plus grand nombre, c'e celui de la
haute montagne. Quelques alpini es chevronn s y ont acc s, mais d'aucuns
n'associent ce e passion vertigineuse une pratique de la photographie
arti ique.
Tout pr s de nous, il a su qu'un jeune natif du plat pays belge rencontre les
sommets des Alpes suisses et du Massif du Mont-Blanc pour d cider d'y
consacrer sa vie. Aujourd'hui, plus de 10 ans apr s une premi re randonn e
initiatique dans le Valais puis la d couverte du Cervin, il se voue corps et me
une seule chose : voir et photographier les Alpes.
Si rien ne pr di osait Thomas Crauwels devenir la fois photographe
et alpini e, avec ABOVE, son premier livre, il prouve qu'il e aujourd'hui
devenu l'un des seuls photographes pouvoir proposer de telles images
de sommets tous situ s plus de 4000 m tres d'altitude. Gr ce lui, nous
avons acc s des paysages hors-du-commun.
Son approche en noir & blanc, sa ma trise des contra es et des lumi res et
une maturit acquise au fi l de ses explorations lui perme ent de sublimer
la montagne sans jamais la fi ger dans une repr sentation r otyp e.

Full Description
The high mountains is a world that remains unknown to most. A few seasoned climbers have access to it, but some do not associate this dizzying passion with a practice of artistic photography. Thomas Crauwels is an award-winning photographer and a mountaineer. With ABOVE, he gives us access to these extraordinary landscapes and images of summits all located more than 4,000 meters above sea level.
The repetition of black and white images underlines the fascination he feels for the vertigo of a summit, the pure line of a ridge, the white light of a hanging glacier, the harmony of a peak, the slope of a precipice, or the verticality of a wall. ABOVE proves to what extent geography and photography are closely intertwined when the mountain becomes the theatre of their union; a territory of beauty and of chaos to be overcome.
