Marie Skobtsov a prononcé ses voeux monastiques en 1932 à Paris. En Russie elle a fait partie des cercles qu'animaient Alexandre Blok, Nikolas Goumilëv, Nathalie Gontcharova... Dès ses tout débuts dans l'art, la future moniale aspire à la connaissance de Dieu. Avec le temps, elle s'éloigne du modernisme et trouve son expression dans le symbolisme pictural et poétique. L'oeuvre de Mère Marie — peintures, dessins, broderies d'une rare expressivité — est conservée par des collectionneurs européens ou bien dans des paroisses orthodoxes en France et en Grande-Bretagne. En 1940, Paris est occupé par la Wehrmacht. Arrêtée pour sa participation à la Résistance, Mère Marie est déportée à Ravensbrück où elle est gazée.

An emigrant from Russia, Mother Marie Skobstov is an artist, poetess and a famous woman of action. This richly illustrated book is the first ever devoted to the life and art of Mother Marie. She was renowned as a poet of the 'Silver Age' in Russia, but not as well-known as an artist as she deserved. Right at the beginning of her artistic creation, she aspired to knowledge of God. With time, she moved away from modernism and found her place in poetic and pictorial symbolism. The work of Mother Marie - paintings, prints, embroideries - is superbly expressive and is conserved by European art collectors, or in Orthodox churches in France and the UK. Few of her visual works have been diffused.
