Comment un grand peuple chrétien est-il possible dans la civilisation de demain ? Le problème religieux n'est pas le problème d'une élite mais celui des masses. Et au niveau des masses, religion et civilisation sont étroitement dépendantes l'une de l'autre. Il n'y a pas de civilisation qui ne soit religieuse. Inversement, une religion de masse n'est possible que soutenue par la civilisation. Or, il nous semble qu'aujourd'hui trop de chrétiens acceptent la juxtaposition d'une religion personnelle et d'une société laïque. Une telle conception est ruineuse tant pour la société que pour la religion. Comment trouver alors une union de l'une et de l'autre, qui n'assujettisse pas la religion aux pouvoirs temporels et qui n'associe pas les pouvoirs temporels à la religion ? C'est une invitation à cette recherche, essentielle pour l'avenir, que voudrait être ce livre.
