The idea of re-incarnation of the human soul has been part of the belief systems of most religions, for many thousands of years. We are indebted to Joy Burnett for this incredible work of fiction in which two disparate souls repeatedly come together in a series of five stories set within the backdrop of different periods of history. In each story she has aimed to create a world that is convincing and authentic, but each is the world of the two characters and theirs alone. Joy does not claim to be a historian but has tried to relate the events that affect the stories as accurately as possible. She comments that, "historical research and abstract ideas alone will not bring a novel to life, so it is the characters that have to be real." It was important for her to see the characters as on-going rather than leaving the void that often happens when the body ceases. The variations of human existence and experience could occur in many lives, but the lessons unlearned, the feelings unexplored, the potential never released are taken into the next incarnation.
