This is designed to enable physicians to understand the basis for acute and chronic pain; counsel patients about lifestyle modifications to decrease the risk of pain; identify the pathophysiology and underlying causes of pain; monitor risk factors and screen patients accordingly; understand the mechanisms of pharmacologic alleviation of pain; evaluate and treat patients with pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies; understand the complications associated with pain management; and make appropriate referrals of patients with complicated conditions.
