Full Description
This three-volume set provides a full collection of written descriptions and interpretations of one of the major cities of the world, from the Norman Conquest to the Great War. It offers the student a range of primary source material, much of it inaccessible to most readers, from a broad range of disciplines. Extensive literary selections in poetry and prose are complemented by readings from chronicles, travel memoirs, sociological and cultural studies and excerpts from the major novels which evoke the spirit of London. Along with the main introduction, seven more specific introductions sketch the changes and continuities of the spirit and character of London; the evolving cityscape and a bibliography for each era to guide the reader through the material of each era. A concluding essay offers an overview of images of London in the visual arts. The three volumes of this publication offer a wide and varied gathering of texts that celebrate and describe, condemn and satirize, document and interpret the life of a complex and changing metropolis, from its early development to its apex as a world centre of power and influence in commerce, politics, the arts and culture.
