The central themes of this work are the transformation of Muslim societies and the politicization of Islam which have resulted from the efforts of Muslim to assert themelves, as Muslims, in the increasingly intense competition for power and the control of economic resources in modern Africa. And notwithstanding the influence of outside powers such as Iran or Saudi Arabia, these studies demonstrate that the evolution of Muslim identities is determined by indigenous, distinctly Africa, responses to social and political change.
