It is 1913 and Lieutenant Caffney, a Belgium national serving in the Hampshire Regiment is seconded to military intelligence. With the outbreak of war leading to divided loyalties, devastation across France and Belgium in conjunction with the ultimate death of thousands of soldiers from either side, there is one burning question for Caffney. Who can he turn to when even his own side want him dead? His love for Elsbeth Branigan, a fellow officer's sister and another officer's wife is consumed throughout the story where neither are who they appear to be.
