Full Description
200 years since the birth of the Stockton and Darlington Railway Mike Amos revisits his home town, Shildon, Co. Durham, "The Cradle of the Railways", from which the world's first passenger railway began. In a year in the life of the town All Change charts the many changes during the last fifty years - not least the closure of the railway wagon works, the town's major employer and the influx of newcomers attracted by some of the cheapest housing in the country - often owned by absentee landlords.
Even so, the town's population is less than half of what it was 100 years ago.
But it's not all gloom. There are many great characters and stories of Shildon folk past and present. There are memories aplenty - of trains, trainspotting, allotments, old-style policing, cricket, football and the many shops, pubs, churches and chapels which once flourished in the town.
While acknowledging the problems - typical of many other towns - the book is affectionate, anecdotal and amusing. And ultimately optimistic. Richly illustrated, this is social history lightly written but with a serious message.
