Full Description
The frontiers of the Roman empire together form the largest monument of one of the world's greatest states. They stretch for some 7,500km through 20 countries which encircle the Mediterranean Sea. The remains of these frontiers have been studied by visitors and later by archaeologists for several centuries. Many of the inscriptions and sculpture, weapons, pottery and artefacts created and used by the soldiers and civilians who lived on the frontier can be seen in museums. Equally evocative of the lost might of Rome are the physical remains of the frontiers themselves. The aim of this series of books is not only to inform the interested visitor about the history of the frontiers but to act as a guidebook as well.
The Roman military remains in North Africa are remarkable in their variety and in their state of preservation: they deserve to be better known. They include towers and forts, stretches of defensive lines of stone and earth with ditches broken by gates, and roads, sitting in the most amazing scenery. It is hoped that each reader of this book will enjoy learning more about North Africa's remarkable Roman inheritance. Die Grenzen des Römischen Reiches bilden zusammen das am großflächigsten erhaltene Monument eines der großartigsten Weltreiche. Sie erstrecken sich auf mehr als 7500 km über 20 Länder rund um das Mittelmeer. Schon seit einigen Jahrhunderten werden die Überreste dieser Grenzanlagen von Besuchern, und später auch von Archäologen, untersucht. Viele der Inschriften und Skulpturen, Waffen, Keramik und andere Gebrauchsgegenstände, die von den in der Grenzzone lebenden Soldaten und Zivilisten hergestellt und benutzt wurden, können heute in Museen besichtigt werden. Ebenso erinnern auch die physischen Überreste der Grenzanlagen an die einstige Macht Roms. Der Zweck dieser Buchserie ist es, den interessierten Besucher über die Geschichte der Grenzen zu informieren aber gleichzeitig auch als Führer zu dienen.
Die militärischen Überreste Roms in Nordafrika sind beachtlich in ihrer Vielfalt und ihrem Erhaltungszustand: sie verdienen es, besser bekannt zu sein. Diese Altertümer umfassen Türme und Kastelle, Abschnitte von Verteidigungslinien aus Stein und Erde mit Gräben, die von Toren unterbrochen werden und Straßen in einer umwerfenden Landschaft. Ich hoffe, dass jeder Leser dieses Buchs mit Vergnügen mehr über das bemerkenswerte Erbe Roms in Nordafrika erfährt. Elles s'étendent sur environ 7.500 km à travers une vingtaine de pays ceinturant la mer Méditerranée. Depuis plusieurs siècles, les vestiges de ces frontières ont fait l'objet d'études par des curieux puis plus tardivement par des archéologues. Bon nombre des inscriptions, sculptures, armes, poteries et autres objets créés et utilisés par les militaires et les civils qui peuplaient ces frontières sont visibles dans les musées. Mais les vestiges physiques de ses frontières sont tout aussi évocateurs de la puissance que fut Rome. La présente séries d'opuscules est conçue non seulement pour informer le visiteur curieux de l'histoire des frontières mais également pour servir de guide sur le terrain.
Les vestiges militaires romains en Afrique du Nord sont remarquables tant par leur diversité que par leur état de conservation : ils méritent d'être mieux connus. On y dénombre des tours et des forts, des tronçons de barrières défensives faites de pierre et de terre bordées de fossés et interrompues par des portes, ainsi que des routes, traversant des paysages tout à fait distinctifs. J'espère que le lecteur prendra plaisir à en apprendre davantage sur l'étonnant héritage romain en Afrique du Nord.
