Full Description
The frontiers of the Roman empire together form the largest surviving monument of one of the world's greatest states. They stretch for some 7,500 km through 20 countries which encircle the Mediterranean Sea. The remains of these frontiers have been studied by visitors and later by archaeologists for several centuries. Many of the inscriptions and sculpture, weapons, pottery and artefacts created and used by the soldiers and civilians who lived on the frontier can be seen in museums. Equally evocative of the lost might of Rome are the physical remains of the frontiers themselves. The aim of this series of booklets is not only to inform the interested visitor about the history of the frontiers but to act as a guidebook as well.
The frontier in Lower Germany was one of the earliest to be created; surviving into the early 5th century, it illustrates the whole range of Roman military installations. In the Rhine delta, the watery nature of the landscape has ensured incredible survivals in the form of organic remains including ships. Upstream are great military bases created for the army poised to invade Germany, supported by forts and fortlets, all modified over time. De grenzen van het Romeinse Rijk vormen samen het grootste bewaarde monument van een van 's werelds grootste staten. Ze strekken zich uit over zo'n 7500 km in 20 landen rondom de Middellandse Zee. De resten van de rijksgrens worden al enkele eeuwen bestudeerd door bezoekers en later door archeologen. Veel inscripties, beelden, wapens, vaatwerk en objecten die zijn vervaardigd en gebruikt door soldaten en burgers die leefden aan de grens, zijn te zien in musea. Even sprekende getuigen van de vergane macht van Rome zijn de fysieke resten van de grenzen zelf. Deze boekenreeks beoogt niet alleen de geïnteresseerde bezoeker te informeren over de geschiedenis van de grenzen maar kan ook dienen als gids.
De grens in Neder-Germanië kwam als een van de eerste tot stand; door haar voortbestaan tot in de vroege 5e eeuw laat zij het complete scala van militaire installaties zien. De Rijndelta heeft met haar waterrijke landschap gezorgd voor een onwaarschijnlijke conservering van organische resten waaronder schepen. Stroomopwaarts zijn enorme militaire bases ingericht voor het leger dat gereedlag om Germanië binnen te vallen, versterkt door een fortenreeks die zich ontwikkelde in loop van de tijd.
