Peter, a man of fifty, encounters a woman on a train to London.
Both he and his closest friends are changed by the ironic consequences.
This "old-fashioned" story is set in the later post-war time before Britain was hit by terrorism and the Covid virus.
The peace of mind eventually discovered by Peter and his friends is perhaps worth considering today.
