Full Description
This book is a detailed study of the interplay of regionalism and nationalism in the Guangxi province during the Republican period, with special attention paid to the War of Resistance years.
This a new study of the so-called "New Guangxi Clique", tracing its role and reach, not simply in Guangxi Province, but also in its articulation with the Chinese Central Government under Chiang Kai-shek and with Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Regionalism and Nationalism at the Nanyang Border sheds new light on nationalism and war in China placing a peripheral province at the centre, and in so doing challenging the idea of periphery itself. The book provides original coverage of the provincial governments' engagements with overseas Chinese communities in the Southeast Asia region, and wartime and post-war refugee relief. Congjie Cheng makes important contributions to the field of modern Chinese history through an exploration of the idea of "regional nationalism and the fields of refugee studies and histories of the Chinese experience in WWII.
