A DELECTABLE NEW EDITION OF JANE AUSTEN'S MASTERPIECE. While there are many different editions of Pride and Prejudice to choose from, the discerning book-lover will be charmed at first sight by this cover, which features paintings of Jane Austen, the "literary lioness" herself; delighted with this typesetting, which is elegant and eminently readable; pleased by this classic novella size, which is just right for holding in the hand; and proud to be encouraging an independent publisher: Black Chicken Unlimited is the roost for most curious bk-bk-bk-books.
Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's second finished novel, written when she was "not one and twenty." Her first novel was Sense and Sensibility, written as a teenager. And, if we are being completely honest, she wrote extensively for all of her youth, forming a fairly large collection of "boisterous" short, satirical pieces. She read all her works to her family; Pride and Prejudice quickly became their "favourite." From what we know of Jane Austen (for much of her history has been lost), it seems she was forever writing, although it wasn't considered proper for a woman to make a career writing; more accurately, it wasn't proper to seek to be a "literary lioness" (a celebrity). For this reason, Jane Austen's works were only published anonymously in her lifetime (after first being rejected by publishers, then bought cheaply by publishers, and eventually, being translated and sold in foreign countries without her permission or to her profit). This edition, edited by A.J. Schaar, seeks to celebrate Jane Austen and give her all the Pride of Place she deserves as a true literary lioness.
