Full Description
This book connects the methodology of currere with the metaphor of the 'pilgrimage' through the author's experiences in and around education to explore the relationship with self, and between self and Other, in the process of be(com)ing a teacher.
Through the author's narrative of their experiences in education internationally—in China, Nepal, Ireland, and Canada—as well as their lived experiences with substance abuse and 12-step programs, the book explores the entwined nature of the personal and professional and the iterative, enduring process of be(com)ing a teacher. While it speaks of addiction, shame, and disillusionment, the underlying theme of the work is forgiveness and reconciliation. The book concludes that attending to the curriculum of the self is a form of self-work that can help teachers find connection and purpose in their work.
Recommended reading for pre-service teachers and researchers interested in curriculum theory, narrative inquiry, teacher education, and autoethnographic research methods.
